IS THERE A SANTA CLAUS?

Consider the following:

1) No known species of reindeer can fly. BUT there are 300,000 species of living organisms yet to be classified, and while most of these are insects and germs, this does not COMPLETELY rule out flying reindeer which only Santa has ever seen.

2) There are 2 billion children (persons under 18) in the world. BUT since Santa doesn't (appear) to handle the Muslim, Hindu, Jewish and Buddhist children, that reduces the workload to 15% of the total - 378 million according to Population Reference Bureau. At an average (census) rate of 3.5 children per household, that's 91.8 million homes. One presumes there's at least one good child in each.

3) Santa has 31 hours of Christmas to work with, thanks to the different time zones and the rotation of the earth, assuming he travels east to west (which seems logical).

This works out to 822.6 visits per second. This is to say that for each Christian household with good children, Santa has 1/1000th of a second to park, hop out of the sleigh, jump down the chimney, fill the stockings, distribute the remaining presents under the tree, eat whatever snacks have been left, get back up the chimney, get back into the sleigh and move on to the next house.

Assuming that each of these 91.8 million stops are evenly distributed around the earth (which, of course, we know to be false but for the purposes of our calculations we will accept), we are now talking about .78 miles per household, a total trip of 75-1/2 million miles, not counting stops to do what most of us must do at least once every 31 hours, plus feeding and etc.

This means that Santa's sleigh is moving at 650 miles per second, 3,000 times the speed of sound. For purposes of comparison, the fastest man- made vehicle on earth, the Ulysses space probe, moves at a poky 27.4 miles per second - a conventional reindeer can run, tops, 15 miles per hour.

4) The payload on the sleigh adds another interesting element. Assuming that each child gets nothing more than a medium-sized lego set (2 pounds), the sleigh is carrying 321,300 tons, not counting Santa, who is invariably described as overweight.

On land, conventional reindeer can pull no more than 300 pounds. Even granting that "flying reindeer" (see point #1) could pull TEN TIMES the normal amount, we cannot do the job with eight, or even nine.

We need 214,200 reindeer. This increases the payload - not even counting the weight of the sleigh - to 353,430 tons. Again, for comparison - this is four times the weight of the Queen Elizabeth.

5) 353,000 tons traveling at 650 miles per second creates enormous air resistance - this will heat the reindeer up in the same fashion as spacecraft re-entering the earth's atmosphere. The lead pair of reindeer will absorb 14.3 QUINTILLION joules of energy. Per second. Each.

In short, they will burst into flame almost instantaneously, exposing the reindeer behind them, and create deafening sonic booms in their wake. The entire reindeer team will be vaporized within 4.26 thousandths of a second.

Santa, meanwhile, will be subjected to centrifugal forces 17,500.06 times greater than gravity. A 250-pound Santa (which seems ludicrously slim) would be pinned to the back of his sleigh by 4,315,015 pounds of force.

In conclusion - If Santa ever DID deliver presents on Christmas Eve, he's dead now.

my group is a bunch of crazy people who are amazingly fun to be with yet equally embarrassing at the same time. haha iono, maybe it's just not my thing to bug the teachers in the way they do. hurhur anyway, we've a bunch of people who suck at remembering chinese names - of which my group is full of - so on the first day, we gave them english names instead! hahaah here's the list

we were late to realise that the chocolates we bought from belgium must be kept under 14 degrees celcius so when we got home, i foolishly opened a box of chocolates only to find little puddles of chocolate soup in each of the plastic sockets!!

told mum about it when she got home but she had already been embarassed in the office when she offered them to her colleagues. hahahahaaaaaaaaaa

so, we decided to make the most expensive home-baked chocolate cake ever! it turned out as dry as daryls sunburn, but that was easily fixed with whipped cream. i must say, that is some GOOOOD cake. heh

More Scooba Divin'.

The sister came back for her holiday so after she had a little time with her friends, we went to KL to see grands/the-rest-of-dad's-side, and take up a 5 day scuba diving course. the first two days were spent reading text books, watching dvds and at swimming pool lessons, and the next 3 were spent on the boat named KALEEBSO at Pulau Jarak. Anyway, basically, the malaysia trip went like this:
1. scuba lessons
2.shopping (the wong siblings used 1 grand in ringgit, thank you.)
3.penang to eat and see more relatives.

My computer has been rendered useless for every other function aside from DotA (thank god, i think.) and iTunes, but occasionally, when mother brings her bloody cool vaio laptop home, i get to use the internet. It's not all good though, because i found out something that i really, REALLY, could have done without discovering at this point of time.

Heh anyway, the haze, which i was going to complain about (but can't now because i forgot what i was going to write) at the time when it was at it's worst, has already begun to settle with PSI levels reaching levels below 50. It's great, because my over-sensitive nose no longer has to deal with the suspended dust particles every day. However, the current haze level still makes my daily 5pm sunset look unattractive.. /=
On a lighter note, good luck to those taking their O's cos they're right around the corner and if you don't look out they'll bite you in the ass. Now then, stop reading and get studying. an 18 hour LAN session awaits us, classmates, on the 18th. :)

hello

Today, i played the role of a lifeguard, a punchbag, a dolphin, and a shark. Uncle James Henshaw and his kids, Russell and Danielle came to stay for the weekend, and we went swimming today. Russell, who couldn't swim without goggles, dived straight into the deep pool and i had to jump in to save his coughing little butt! however, he was not afraid and just kept attempting to go in over and over again! in the end, i chucked him on my back and swam around with him on my back.

After that, Danielle went to the shallow pool and russell followed. they started playing with the frogs and i was the 'evil monster' (it's in inverted brackets for a reason! ;) and they used the water that was being shot out from the frogs' mouth to spray me... but Danielle had a better idea. she chased me with her kickboard and beat the A MATH out of me! i'll put the pictures up when they get back from wherever they're going. heh in the meantime, here's the cute little boy, Russell.

hair clips/pins/whatever-you-call-ems

you know those hair thingamajiggys that girls wear? THEY'RE EVIL. puttin them on is insanely difficult and taking them out requires much skill and patience, both of which i lack tremendously. i had to wear them (3!!!!) to pin my fringe up so it wouldn't curl up against the force of the fan. So i went to my sister's room and dug up a couple from her drawer.

putting them on took me 5 minutes alone as i kept pinning but a few strands of hair up! then when i wanted to take them off, i just yanked away and my hair came out!! hahahaaaaaaoooowwww. =\ evil i say.. EVIL!!

today, i went to Jurong East library to study, and while waiting for the others, i topped up my card. i passed the lady my ez-link and a 10 dollar bill, and requested for a top-up of 5 dollars. so she did the honours and handed me 5 1-dollar coins! after a polite request, she told me she had no notes so i let it be and went over to the library.

On the trip home, i found that my card had not increased in value. in fact, i belive it even decreased by.. ten cents or sth. )= currently, i have a heavier wallet and... i frown. ballz. i don't even know what i'm. fishballs. textbook. just naming a few. cup.

bus rides on 171 on crappy sunday mornings

Went to meet Addis at suntec to get my samsung phone back, so i had to wake up at 8. so it's a sunday right, i had happily forgotten that it was most maid's day off, and that they normally go out in the morning, to town, taking 171, and there were a LOT of them. I was, unfortunately, reminded of this, by the sudden influx of filipino passengers all of which seemed more than excited to be going out. Believe me you, there was WAY too noise, WAY too much wierd smelling perfume, and WAYWAYWAYWAYWAY too much curly long hair.(go to july's archives and refer to post at the bottom of the page to understand) omgoodness. i could've died, had it not been for the comfort of my music. they're language, (tagalog issit?. hehe, tag-a-log) without offence, is a very annoying sound to hear, especially if it's coming from 40 different mouths at any paricular instant. as the bus passed more housing estates, more and more maids got on and there was more noise, more 'perfume' and more curly goddamnlong hair! i was practically breathing in the air-con so i wouldn't have to sneeze every 2 seconds. ironic eh? *sigh*... well, reached suntec, had a few runs on the indoor park with faz's new haffey's 04s then went back home.

on a random note, on the way back, i saw that the Australian High Commission is on 'Middlesex Road'. no joke.

danish butter cookies are the best. the BEST. it's 6 bucks for a tin, and i finish half of it in 30 minutes. you'd also want to try delifrances' sugared scones'. it's 3 dollars for 9, then for now, you get another 6 free. mum bought like 45 home last night and when that night ended, there were 28 left. but it's some offer so the 'Buy 9 get 6 free' won't last too long. and, and, and, Kettle Chips from Australia are the best chips EVER. i don't know how much those cost, but i, a major tight arse, would gladly pay up to 4 bucks for a bag.

OOAHHH (how does a yawn sound in letters?)

yesterday, andrew and i got online at 8, and did homework till about 10. english comprehension or something. after that, we proceeded to trying to understand the html business - lower computerese. so we racked our brains till about 2 a.m. and then we started out chemistry paper 2. we did the whole first section then i saw him fall asleep on the webcam so after a burp to the mic, he woke up, finished his paper, then we packed. it was like 3 a.m. and we had school at 8 later/the next day. so we decided to stop there. anyway, after oral, we did some math in sch before heading to LAN. andrew went fishing and he jsut got online but i presume he's sleeping like a log on his bed now, just as i did after LAN. have you ever been so tired that you can't even hear what people say?

frills, thrills, and long curly hair.

do you not just absolutely HATE it when you're sittin on the bus, minding your own business, and this maid decides to stand next to your seat and swing her long curly hair into your ear?

i am on my way to town right, and i sit in a seat on the outer isle of the bus. Then, unfortunately for me, 2 maids walked up and stand beside my seat. first of all, they talk loudly in their language (no offence) which isn't the nicest language to hear, and it overrides my softer songs. Each time the bus jerks, they give sudden shrieks and quickly grab onto the handle behind my seat, stumbling and hitting my head. what's worse is, to prevent being flung around every now and then, this one maid decideds to lean on the seat handle, sending her long curly hair swinging to my ear. being surprised at the sudden contact, i cringe and the person next to me looks at me as if im some retard. but no, it doesn't stop there, each time the bus stops, it happens and although prepared, a cringe from the hooking action of her hair on my ear is inevitable. after about 4 times, i am unable to stand it so i move in front a little bit and turn to stare at her, but she has her eyes locked on her friend in gay (excuse the pun) conversation and takes no notice of me. i swear to myself that when i alight the bus, i will give her a stare she will never forget but lucky plaza is 1 bus stop before HMV. so i had no choice but to let it pass and put the hatred up here. i HATE long curly hair and i HATE ignorant, rude and disgusting maids.
if i ever hire one, i shall do the public a favor and get one with short hair, at the least.
